About Coryell Valley

CORYELL VALLEY, TEXAS is on Farm Road 929 six miles northeast of Gatesville in northeastern Coryell County.The area is also known as Coffey, after Smith Coffey, one of the early settlers.

In the 1870′s the original school, church and cemetery were located along Coryell Creek two miles west of the current Coryell Valley Chapel.

The church site was shared by four denominations, each having use of the building one week per month. The groups included Southern Methodists, Methodist Protestants, Primitive Baptists and Missionary Baptists.

In 1905 land was deeded for church use at the current location. During the 1980′s the church site was abandoned and in 2008 the Sotero and Sarah Gomez family began to renovate the old rock church and hold worship events there.

 

Since 2008, many things have occurred in Coryell Valley. Some of these things include:

b2   The 1930′s rock church  was restored

b2  A community building was added behind the church with restrooms,

     showers, a kitchen, a loft and wifi

b2  Coryell Valley Cabin was added

b2  A Wesleyan congregation was established

b2  Coryell Valley hosted concerts, including an A cappella group

     from Africa, and numerous gospel groups

 

There are 2 creeks that border the land for 1 mile. Several area churches have baptisms in Coryell Creek. There are about 100 yards of small waterfalls as well.

Coryell Valley runs about 5 miles from east to west along Coryell Creek
and is about 1 mile wide. It lies among cedar and oak covered limestone bluffs and contains some of the most fertile bottom land in the county.

Some of the wildlife that have been seen in Coryell Valley include: deer, turkey, feral hogs, mountain lions, raccoons, possums, armadillos and coyotes. Domesticated creatures that live in Coryell Valley are horses,cattle, goats, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs.
